A trial of shared e-scooters and e-bikes has started across Darebin in February 2026. This gives local people more ways to get around Northcote, Fairfield and Alphington and connect with public transport, shops and workplaces!

E-scooters are currently only able to travel in the Darebin trial area (Northcote, Fairfield and Alphington).  You can hire an e-bike in the trial area, and even ride it all the way to St Kilda!

Share e-bikes are also available in Yarra, Melbourne City and Port Phillip Council areas.

Designated parking bays

When using shared e-bikes and e-scooters you must return them to designated parking bays in the Darebin trial area. This is a new approach compared to other areas, to test improved technology to keep footpaths and public spaces accessible.

Improved technology is also being trialled to detect and deter riding on footpaths, and slow scooters in busy shared areas. Riders must be at least 16, wear helmets, obey traffic laws and not exceed a top speed of 20 km/h.

During this six-month trial, Darebin Council will track how people use e-scooters and e-bikes and gather community feedback, and then report back to Council.
